MEET THE NEWEST MEMBER OF OUR TEAM

MEET THE NEWEST MEMBER OF OUR TEAM

Author: Valerie Jauregui/Sunday, June 16, 2024/Categories: Quinton Anthony

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.

My path to HR Management hasn’t been typical. I studied Marketing in college in Ireland and pursued a career in Retail Management before transitioning to my first HR role over 6 years ago. Since then, I have built my experience across various industries and HR disciplines while working in multiple geographical jurisdictions.

With a keen interest in business and an innate desire to help people, solve problems, and lead, HR Management was a natural progression for me. Thankfully, it’s a career I truly enjoy.

WHAT INITIALLY ATTRACTED YOU TO JOIN QA?

I was drawn to consultancy because it offers a great opportunity to collaborate with multiple organisations and be exposed to varied and interesting projects. Once I met the QA team and learned more about their approach to business and working methods, I instantly knew the company would be a good fit for me.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU BRING TO THE QA TEAM?

My generalist background has helped me fine-tune a whole host of skills. However, if I had to pick one, it would be problem-solving.

I’ve often been told that I have a unique ability to remain calm, positive, and find a resolution no matter how high the odds seem to be stacked against me.

I truly believe there is always a way to achieve a desired outcome; you just have to focus on what’s within your control and what you can do to effect change rather than dwell on a poor state of play.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR CAREER AT QA WITH LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK?

It’s important to set boundaries with yourself to achieve work-life balance.

I’m a big believer in Parkinson's Law, and over the years, I’ve learned (the hard way!) that working around the clock does not always lead to my best work. Now, I’m far more disciplined. I set deadlines for myself and have various strategies to help me remain focused and efficient throughout my working day, ensuring I stay on top of my workload so can leave the office at a reasonable hour.

Establishing a routine like this has really helped me switch off, allowing me to enjoy my personal time and return to work refreshed.

IF YOU COULD INSTANTLY BECOME AN EXPERT IN SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Diplomacy and conflict resolution – tying back to my problem-solving skills. I’m a natural mediator, good at finding common ground and compromise.

WHAT DOES BEING A 'TRUSTED ADVISOR' MEAN TO YOU?

It means being a reliable, experienced support to others. Someone who has invested the time to understand the unique challenge another person is facing and help guide them to a resolution specific to their needs.

Credibility and having a good track record are always key here, as well as honesty. When giving advice, you must manage expectations before promising something you can’t deliver or predict.

BIGGEST PET PEEVE?

Unproductive meetings.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF PROFESSIONALLY IN 5 YEARS?

In a senior leadership role – The prospect of being involved in leading an entire business, not just the HR function, really excites me.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED, AND HOW HAS IT IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?

‘If it won’t matter in 5 years, don’t spend more than five minutes worrying about it.’

Worrying is such an unproductive activity. This phrase often helps me to reframe my perspective and get on with work/life.

NAME FOUR PEOPLE, LIVING OR DEAD, THAT YOU WOULD HAVE OVER FOR DINNER.

I should probably have a more highbrow answer for this, but if I’m throwing a dinner party, laughing is my highest priority.

  1. Jeremy Clarkson – a controversial but fun fella

  2. Graham Hancock – I find his theories utterly fascinating. He’s an interesting and entertaining guy all around

  3. Joanne McNally – An Irish comic that would be a great addition to any party

  4. Kris Jenner - say what you will - she’s a modern icon, super successful, and a bit of craic (in the Irish sense!)

WHAT'S ONE PASSION PROJECT OF YOURS?

It's not so much a project yet, but certainly a passion.

I’m constantly reminded of patriarchal influences still embedded in modern society (p.s. - the irony of listing Clarkson as a dinner guest is not lost on me). I aspire to affect positive change for women, particularly in business, during my career. I’ve already achieved some 'wins' in this regard, but know there’s more to be done.
